Why Everyone is So Interested in The Millionaire Living in His Van

By now, you've heard of the young baseball star Daniel Norris, who decided to take his 2-million dollar signing bonus and invest in living in a van down by the river.

Daniel Norris is a baseball star. He's 21, he has an arm like a cannon, and he lives in a VW van. There aren't many people in the world who choose to live in a van after receiving a two-million dollar signing bonus. Over the last few weeks his story has been shared by thousands of people across the world, but why are we all so damn interested in this kid?

Typically, when a young athlete becomes a millionaire overnight, they will immediately partake in what the media tells us are the finer things in life. We are bombarded every single day by thousands of marketing messages that instill in us a desire to have more possessions. We are told that more stuff = more happiness. So many people believe equation to be true, but it's not. This is why we are all so captivated by this kids story. It's message runs contrary to all of the noise we hear every day. We see rap stars, athletes, and other elitists constantly showing off how much they have, yet here is a star athlete who can have it all and chooses not to. It's an empowering message for everyday people like you and me.This man and his actions serve as a reminder to the rest of us. We're reminded of the happiness that can be attained by living a simple life. It's refreshing and liberating when you realize that the endless pursuit of material possessions is nothing more than a rat race. His story has been shared so many times because it shows the world that the best things in life really are free. It's our relationships that give life meaning, whether with our loved ones or the great outdoors, and it feels damn amazing to be reminded of that. Photo Credit: Sharlene Rydie, Daniel Norris, and Katherine Williams.
